Turksih rugs :: Eastern Anatolia

Eastern Anatolia Carpet production in this region, populated primarily by nomadic peoples, was influenced from the north by the Caucasus and from the south by Persia. Thus, it is difficult to ascribe rugs to specific locales in this region. Carpets from Eastern Anatolia do generally share certain characteristics, namely, elementary geometric decoration with two to five rows of polygonal medallions in subdued colors.

		But one area in Eastern Anatolia with a readily identifiable style is the Kars area. Together with the Caucasus, this ancient production center created the dragon carpets in the 16th century. And in the 19th century, the Kars area introduced the Turkish Kazaks with large polygonal forms in muted colors on pale backgrounds.
