The Ottoman imperial Tughra script was used not only on official documents but also on coins. This striking example, in which the tughra itself is the only epigraph on the obverse, comes from the reign of Sultan Ahmed III, one of the most gifted patrons in the history of Ottoman art.
The mint name is Istanbul, a play on the colloquial name of the city. Most Ottoman coins had Qustantiniyya, 'Constantinople!'
