| Information |
The Corning Museum of Glass houses the world's greatest glass collection and the library of record for the history, art, and early technology of glassmaking. The glass collection contains more than 33,000 objects representing every country and historical period in which glassmaking has been practiced. The earliest objects in the collection were made by the Egyptians 3,500 years ago; the most recent items were made by artists or manufacturers within the last few months.
The objects featured in this section were chosen by the Museum's curators to provide a glimpse of the wealth and diversity of the collection. They also present an overview of outstanding achievements in glass design and craftsmanship through the ages. Each image has information about the object illustrated and captions containing additional information about how the objects were made, what they depict, and why they are important. |

Between the seventh and 14th centuries, Islamic glassmakers accomplished some extraordinary things. They discovered the technique of staining glass, produced some of the world’s finest cut glass, perfected the art of enameling and gilding on glass, and revived or rediscovered a number of other techniques.
These achievements are celebrated in "Glass of the Sultans," the first major exhibition of Islamic glass, organized by The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Corning Museum of Glass. The show will be presented at the Corning Museum from May 24 to September 3, 2001. It will include more than 150 objects, ranging from utilitarian wares to prestigious pieces made for sovereigns. |
